Etihad first apartment

The moment we saw this promo movie from Etihad, with an overview of their first class apartments, we knew one day we would fly it, no matter what. In october it was finally our moment to enjoy this superior flying experience. Flying reimagined, as Etihad it likes to call it.

Reimagined, it’s the least you could say. Our Etihad experience blew us away. After a lot of miles up in the air with discount airlines a totally new world opened up for us. After a couple of relaxing days in Abu Dhabi our Etihad chauffeur picked us up at the Radisson Blu Yas Island (which we can really recommend by the way). He dropped us off at terminal 3, where we entered the airport through our very own first class entrance. The distance between the drop off zone and the first class lounge is no more than 100 metres. So you already start felling like a VIP from the first moment. After checking in we discovered the brand new first class lounge, which is really classy decorated. We started with a glass of Bollinger champagne, which we actually didn’t really like. Fortunately the Duval Leroy rosé tasted heavenly.

To relax before your flight every first class passenger can enjoy a complementary treatment in the Six Senses Spa. While Christophe enjoyed his foot massage Heidi got a facial treatment. There was a lot more to discover in this lounge, so make sure you’re early when you fly from Abu Dhabi. So you can fully enjoy the excellent service and experience there.

What did you think of a relaxing nap in the snooze area? Or tasting an exclusive Henney Paradis cognac (625 dollars per bottle) in the cigar lounge. It’s all possible here, but we chose to visit the restaurant. Our sommelier Salah organized a wine tasting at our table and recommended an excellent Saint-Emilion from 2012. Our lunch was delicious and was completed with some cappucino’s and an 18 year old Glenfiddich. We could easily spend a few more hours here, but we heard the last call for our flight so we rushed towards the gate.

The apartment

Our Airbus A380 has a capacity of 520 passengers. Because of its size and shape, people also call it the flying whale. On the upper level we found our apartments. We booked seats 3A and 4A. Both seats are connected through a partition you can lower. This makes our apartments even look bigger. These seats are perfect when you travel as a couple because you can interact in the semi-private rooms. The leather seats are very wide and come with a built in massage option you can activate on a touch screen in the arm rest. The crew provided us with pajamas and slippers. In our very own closet we found an amenity kit with luxury products from Omorovicza and Christian Lacroix. We were ready for take off…

Time for a pre-departure drink and some snacks. Catharina, our purser proposed a nice Duval Leroy Rosé, which we knew from back in the lounge. First class has its own chef, who stopped by in our apartment to explain the menu and take our order. The ‘dine any time’ concept makes it possible to dine whenever and orer whatever you want. With the best view in the world we started of with some arabic mezze, the best we ever had. We chose to dine apart to have some more space, but it’s perfectly possible to dine together. A romantic diner at 4000 feet? Etihad will make it happen. There ‘s more than room enough in the apartment.

Our steak was a little overcooked, but the rest of our 6 course diner was simply delicious. It’s magical what this chef can serve on a plane. Catharina made sure we had some pairing wines with every course and we spoiled ourselves at the end with an extra Irish coffee.

Shower on a plane

Now, toilets on a plane can make you feel very claustrofobic. Our Etihad bathroom had a very open feeling, thanks to some indirect light effects. A assortment of luxury products is available to freshen up. The spacious bathroom even has a shower. Taking a shower at 4000 feet was a really fun. Even though you only have 5 minutes of water, this truely is a unique experiene.

In the meantime Catharina had started the turndown service. She made up our beds, sprayed some pillow mist on our sheets and pillows and showed us how we could turn our big screen TV’s. Our personal mini bar was refilled with cold drinks in case we wanted to drink something. We  took a short nap next to eachother, another advantage of the connecting seats. And no, we’re not members of the mile high club now…

On our flightmap we saw London appear and the plane was already starting its landing. But there was still time enough to enjoy some more champagne and  try the famous Etihad steak sandwich. This one was cooked perfectly and the honey mustard sauce topped it off!

After landing the crew was waiting for us to exit. For the first time ever, we didn’t really want to leave. When you want to experience a journey that’s even better than the destination…try this flight!
